Each spring, Paralyzed Veterans of America (PVA) members travel to Washington, D.C., to meet with legislators about the issues that are important to all veterans living with catastrophic disabilities. This year marks the beginning of the 116th Congress, which brings a change in leadership of the House of Representatives and marks the arrival of many new representatives and senators. It’s vital for elected officials to fully appreciate and understand the importance of health care and benefits available through the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), as well as the need to protect the rights of Americans living with disabilities.

As is PVA’s tradition, its annual four-day Advocacy and Legislation Training Seminar, hosted by the orgnization’s Government Relations Department, kicks off March 4 with two days of training on the issues. Attendees will then spend two days on Capitol Hill educating legislators about PVA’s top legislative priorities for 2019. PVA National President David Zurfluh will also testify before a joint hearing of the House and Senate Committees on Veterans’ Affairs to emphasize the areas the organization expects the committees to focus on this year.

While face-to-face meetings with legislators are important in sharing PVA’s message, every member, along with his or her family members and friends, must play a role in advocating for the issues that are important to PVA. Even if you aren’t traveling to D.C., PVA encourages you to email, call or write your members of Congress to echo PVA’s priorities. It’s only by working together that PVA will continue to be the force needed on Capitol Hill to ensure that all veterans and people with disabilities are able to live full and independent lives. The following is a closer look at PVA’s priorities for this year.
