Although no one can predict the future with certainty, emerging trends in specific areas of healthcare provide a window into possible future scenarios for spinal-cord injury (SCI) care. Part 1 (March 2000) examined general changes as well as specific ones in the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) healthcare system.

* Attitudinal Changes in Society

Although the VA healthcare system has undergone tremendous changes over the last five years, support for veterans programs remains strong in the national conscience. While it is difficult to predict what the future holds for people with SCI/D, one thing is certain: Technology will continue to break down barriers to enable those with disabilities to become individuals of ability.
