Sauer Headed to Hall of Fame

Coming off leading the United States sledge hockey team to its second straight Paralympic Games gold medal, coach Jeff Sauer will receive a major honor.

Sauer, originally from St. Paul, Minn., will be inducted into the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame as a 2014 class member, along with Karyn Bye Dietz

(River Falls, Wis.), Brian Rafalski (Dearborn, Mich.) and Lou Vairo (Brooklyn, N.Y.). Those four will be formally enshrined Dec. 4 in Minneapolis.

Sauer has spent more than 40 years coaching hockey and is now in his fourth year as the U.S. National Sledge Hockey Team coach, also leading Team USA to a gold medal at the 2012 International Paralympic Committee Ice Sledge Hockey World Championship.

Besides coaching the Paralympic team, he’s also led the 1995 U.S. Men’s National Team and U.S. teams that participated in the 1990 Goodwill Games, 1997 Tampere Cup and 1989 Pravada Cup. Sauer, who coached at the University of Wisconsin from 1982–2002, ranks seventh all-time in NCAA Division I men’s college coaching career wins (655) and has won two national championships, both coming with the University of Wisconsin (1983 and 1990). He led the Badgers to three NCAA Men’s Frozen Four appearances, 12 NCAA Tournament berths, six Western Collegiate Hockey Association playoff titles and two regular-season championships.

Sauer also serves as the American Hearing Impaired Hockey Association President. He’s received USA Hockey’s Distinguished Achievement Award (2000), the American Hockey Coaches Association’s John “Snooks” Kelly Founders Award (2004) and the NHL’s Lester Patrick Trophy (2011). He’s also been inducted into the Wisconsin Hockey Hall of Fame, Wisconsin Athletic Hall of Fame, Colorado Springs Sports Hall of Fame and Colorado College Athletic Hall of Fame.
