Hot weather at the Butch Ward Memorial Bass Tournament, held June 23-25 on the Potomac River in Smallwood State Park, near Waldorf, Md., didn't slow down the southern anglers. This tournament was the fourth stop on the 2001 PVA National Bass Trail. Approximately 86 anglers with disabilities vied for the Open Competition's top two places, which would qualify them for the PVA Grand National Championship—the first-ever championship fishing event for people with disabilities—scheduled for October 25-28 at Lake Toho, in Osceola County, Fla. (Fish Tales, July 2001).

The first place team—Glen Mayes (Va.) and Mike Glazier (Md.)—weighed in a limit of 8 for a total of 20.97 lb.

In the Bank Competition, Georgia's David Auvenshine, eventual winner, inadvertently placed his cane so it fell to the bottom of the Potomac River. Nevertheless, he stole first place with 4.09 lb.
