Spinal-cord injury connects personal life stories in essay form.

View Forum | Print Article | Font Size + / - | Back

Edited by Stanley G. Klein and Gary Karp, From There to Here: Stories of Adjustment to Spinal Cord Injury includes 45 personal life stories. All of them are connected by a powerful experience: spinal-cord injury. The essays illustrate the real and complex process of how people respond to sudden and overwhelming change. The short stories express the denial, anger, depression and fear that occurs when a life-changing event interrupts life. They start from trauma and confusion (There) and ultimately arrive at a place each calls “adjustment” (Here). The heart of these stories is what happened in between — the journey to adjustment, acceptance, meaning, and possibility.
