Mike Rodriguez's new pickup truck has given him back his freedom.

Since Mike Rodriguez received his Ford F150 pickup truck outfitted with a wheelchair lift, hand controls, and power transfer device, he’s felt nothing but freedom.

“It’s like being born again,” says Rodriguez. “It’s given me my freedom to do what I love to do. You figure out how things can be done if you just open your heart and mind and then go for it! Sometimes I have to remind people that it’s just legs that aren’t working, not my brain.”

Rodriguez, who is paraplegic, was injured in a semi-trailer truck accident in 2006. He owned a pickup at the time and had to sell it. While he was at Craig Hospital (Englewood, Colo.), he saw a pickup outfitted with accessibility equipment and knew that’s what he wanted.

Kansas Truck Mobility helped Rodriguez equip his Ford F150. He says when he first got his new truck, it was a little scary.

“I needed to go back to Craig, but I was determined to go by myself,” he says. “I wanted to prove, especially to myself, that I could be on my own.”

Now Rodriguez is back to deer and pheasant hunting, fishing, attending baseball games, and working on his associate’s degree at Dodge City (Kan.) Community College.

In 2010, Rodriguez killed a mule deer. He’s hunted and fished all his life. “I probably shouldn’t say this, but sometimes that wheelchair lift has helped me load the deer,” says Rodriguez.
