What is "optimal health"? In recent years, healthcare professionals have agreed that health is not merely "freedom from disease" or disability but that it includes life's physical, emotional, social, spiritual, and intellectual aspects as well. Not only medical self-care and treatment of health problems promote optimal health; increasing potential does so as well.

In the March 2003 PN/Paraplegia News, information reprinted from a brochure published by the RRTC on Aging With Spinal Cord Injury defines the five areas of health and tells what you can do to continue to grow—and remain in good health—in the presence of SCI.
