Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) researchers have been working for decades to improve healthcare for veterans and the nation. In 1998, VA launched the Quality Enhancement Research Initiative (QUERI), a large program designed to assure that new research findings become part of everyday care for veterans treated in the VA healthcare system.

All QUERI Coordinating Centers use a six-step process to plan their work to improve healthcare practice and patient outcomes. This article describes the six steps, shares a success story, and looks to the future.
